Best Way to Reach Kashmir from Kolkata

Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and one of the most beautiful cities in India, known for its stunning landscapes and historical significance. Situated in the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar is famous for its picturesque Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, and houseboats. The Mughal Gardens like Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh reflect the city's rich history. Visitors also enjoy a ride on the shikaras (traditional wooden boats) and exploring the old city's markets, known for Kashmiri handicrafts and shawls. Its proximity to the Himalayas makes it a gateway to adventure tourism.

There are four modes of travel from Kolkata to Srinagar. Below I am giving all the details about the travel vehicle, cost and route. You can compare all of them and see which is the best for you. I have highlighted the lowest and highest costs in my Blog.

1.Plane Travel : 

Kolkata CCU to Srinagar SXR ( There are many flights with Non-stop, 1-stop, 2-stops)

Minimum cost is 8000 (+ GST) and Maximum cost is 62,000 (+GST) for 1 person.

In this plane journey you just need to take a bus or car or taxi to Kolkata airport. Then you can take a direct flight to Srinagar and reach Srinagar.  From there you can take a taxi to the hotel of your choice. This is the best way to reach Srinagar.  It takes only 6 to 8 hours to reach Srinagar from Kolkata.  If you want to go in less time then you can choose this route.

2.Train Travel : 

Route 1

1st Journey

Sealdah / Howrah (Station) to New Delhi (Station) (There are many trains i.e Rajdhani Express,                                                                                               Bikaner Duronto Express, Poorva Express, New                                                                                      Delhi Duronto Express, New Delhi Rajdhani Express)

Minimum cost is 400 (+GST) for General Coach and Maximum cost is 4500 (+GST) for 1A-First AC

2nd Journey 

(i) New Delhi railway station gate 2 to Tolstoy Marg Rd(Delhi) by Bus (cost 9-20 RS/Person)

and then Tolstoy Rd to Srinagar by Bus (cost 700-2500 RS/Person)

(ii) New Delhi Station to MCTM Udhampur by Train (cost 250-2500 RS/Person)

and then MCTM Udhampur to Banihal by Bus (cost 200-300 RS/Person)

then Banihal Station to Srinagar Station by Train (cost 45-90 RS/Person) 

Route 2 

1st Journey

Kolkata (Station) to Jammu Tawi (Station) (One Trains ie. Jammu Tawi Express)

Sealdah (Station) to Jammu Tawi (Station) (Jammu Tawi Humsafar Express)

Howrah (Station) to Jammu Tawi (Station) (Himgiri Express) 

Minimum cost is 450 +GST for general coach and 5000 +GST for 1A- First AC

2nd Journey

(i) Jammu Tawi Railway Station to Srinagar by Bus or hire taxi (cost 1000-1500 RS/Person) 

(ii) Jammu Tawi to Sangaldan by Taxi (cost on demand 3800-4500)

and then Sangaldan Station to Srinagar (cost 140-1500)

So if you want to go by train, these are two route. In the 1st route you have to reach Sealdah or Howrah station first.  Many trains to New Delhi are available from there. You can travel by Duronto, Rajdhani, Bikaner trains. By train your travel time to New Delhi will take around 20 hours and you will get the train General Coach at the lowest price and 1st AC Coach at the highest price.  After getting down at New Delhi you have to come through gate two and from there take a bus to Tolstoy road. Then you will get direct bus to Srinagar from there.

Also another way to go from New Delhi is you have to take a new train from New Delhi station to Udhampur station. From there you have to take bus to banihal station and from that station you can directly go to Srinagar station

 In the 2nd route you have to reach Sealdah or Howrah or Kolkata Station first then you have to go Jammu Tawi station, trains names are given above you can take any train you like. After reaching Jammu Tawi station you have to take a bus or hire a taxi to Srinagar.

Total travel time from Kolkata to Srinagar by train and bus will take you around 30 to 40 hours. But on this journey you will be able to see many beautiful surroundings. You can use IRCTC app or website to book all train tickets and you can use where is my train app to check your train timings.

3.Road Travel  

Kolkata to Srinagar (Car or Bike ) (NH12 -- NH19 -- NH120 -- NH922 -- NH731 -- NH44 -- NH344 )

Traveling from Kolkata to Srinagar by road will take you around 44 hours with a total travel distance of around 2500 km. You can drive your car or bike over NH with the help of google maps. Where your expenses will be entirely your own. 

If you want to go from Kolkata to Srinagar by bus, you have to first come from Kolkata to Delhi by bus and then again from Delhi to Srinagar by bus. But I would say to avoid the bus journey as it will take a lot of time and you can get very sick.
